Biography

Sarah (van Scyoc/ Van Schaick) Barnhart (FamilySearch Person: LHGT-9WH with apparent errors) is said to have been born on 5 October 1793[1] in the recently created Franklin County[2], Pennsylvania.

She married bef. 1806FamilySearch to John Barnhart, a farmer born about 1778 in what was than Cumberland Co.[2] County, Pennsylvania, an area that became Franklin Co in Sep 1784 and Perry Co in 1820. They are said to have had 8 children, three in Franklin CoFamilySearch before the move by 1815 to what became Toboyne Township, Perry Co. when and where her alleged son, John (FamilySearch Person: KPQH-MDX Perry should be Cumberland as it was formed in 1820)) was born and daughter Sarah was born abt 1825[2]. The move appears to coincide with his father's death the year before in Fannett 1814.

1850 Census[2] of Toboyne Tshp., Perry Co., PA, p. 723, 5 Oct
John Barnhart, age 72, b. in Cumberland Co., Farmer
Sarah Barnhart, age 66, b. in Franklin Co.
Sarah Barnhart, age 25, b. in Perry Co.

Parents and Siblings Her parents, the van Scyoc/s must have moved to Perry as he left a Will dated 19 Feb 1830[3] five years after Sarah's birth (1825). Sarah was bequeathed the sum of $2.00, presumably because she had received her share of her father's fortune when she married. John van Scyoc mentions his wife Sarah and children Benjamin, Jane Linn, Margaret Kelly, 'Achsah McGee' and grandson, Jonathan as well as Sarah. He is said to have died some eight years after writing his will in 1838[citation needed].

Clues for Further Research The use of the word 'move' does not necessarily imply distance. Toboyne Twp is at the southern end of Perry co where it joins Fannett twp, Franklin and Cumberland counties. While the first children were allegedly born in Fannett and the youngest in Cumberland as well as john reported born in Cumberland, might suggests John was from western Cumberland, perhaps near Newburg, although his alleged father is said to have died in Amberson Valley (west side of Blue Mtn tunnel I76) of Fannett in 1814 just before the move to neighboring Toboyne. This area apparently expanded tremendously the time John was born in 1778 through his marriage abt 1806 during the "Big Spring Presbyterian Congregation" centered at Newville Cumberland[4]. Thus john may have been born in Cumberland but transplanted to Franklin early where he met Sarah. His father, Peter Barnhart was in Fannett at age >45 in 1800[5] with five males, presumably his children but none of his age at 22 as expected if he married in 1806. Peter is further taxable in what became Letterkenny and green twps Franklin adjacent to Fannett and Cumberland in 1786[6] with all the familiar families of the Presbytery Big Spring Congregation.

Sarah is said to have passed away a year after the 1850 census in October 1851[citation needed] the same as her husband before 21 Oct 1851(WP)[1][7]. likely in Toboyne Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania.

Research Notes

Fern, daughter of Eva Louise (Horn) Miller (1911-2010), is an mtDNA matches to Kirby (Mullenberg) Drake. I'm adding the mtDNA category to female line associated with this connection. -Mullenberg-4 16:45, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
